AIG employees starting to return bonuses, CEO says

WASHINGTON - The head of battered insurance giant AIG told Congress on Wednesday that "we've heard the American people loudly and clearly" in their rage over executive bonuses, and he appealed to employees to return at least half the money.

Testifying under oath at a congressional hearing as intense as any in recent memory, Edward Liddy said some workers already have stepped forward to give money back.

The company became the target of a political firestorm after the disclosure over the weekend that it had paid $165 million in "retention bonuses" to its employees at the same time it was accepting bailout funds from U.S. taxpayers. Some of the payments were made to the same traders and executives whose risky financial behavior caused the company's near collapse.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama said Wednesday he wants legislation to give the federal government vast new powers over financial institutions like AIG to protect the public.

Obama, speaking to reporters at the White House, said the powers would be similar to those now exercised over banks by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. It would be part of the administration's broader package of new finance regulatory steps, he said.

Since AIG is an insurance company and not a bank, it is not subject to the same oversight.

"We've got a big mess that we're having to clean up," the president said. "Nobody here drafted those contracts" that resulted in the bonuses being paid out to AIG employees, he added.

Obama also defended his administration _ and specifically Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner _ against questions about its handling of the AIG fiasco.

"Nobody here was responsible for supervising AIG and allowing themselves to put the economy at risk by some of the outrageous behavior that they were engaged in," Obama said.

Now, however, "the buck stops with me," he said. "And my goal is to make sure that we never put ourselves in this kind of position again."

Liddy told a House Financial Services subcommittee that, while the bonuses were a legal obligation of the company that is now 80 percent owned by the federal government, he had "asked those who have received retention payments in excess of $100,000 or more to return at least half of those payments. Some have already stepped up and returned" 100 percent.

He provided no further details.

Under questioning, Liddy said he allowed the bonuses because he believed to do otherwise "could have brought down the whole corporation. ... We thought it was wiser to err on the side of caution."

Asked if AIG could survive without additional government money, Liddy said, "I believe we are adequately capitalized, particularly with the ability to draw down on the additional $30 billion" in bailout money in the pipeline. Survival "is very much a function of what happens with the capital markets around the globe. If investment values, if asset values continue to go down, it will be a problem for everybody in the life insurance industry."

Responding to a question, Liddy also said the Federal Reserve knew in advance of the bonus payments and acquiesced in them.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has been publicly critical of the bonuses, as have Obama, Geithner and congressional leaders from both parties.

Despite Liddy's announcement that employees were stepping forward to return bonus money, he ran into a wall of criticism from committee members.

Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., chairman of the Financial Services Committee, demanded that the company submit to Congress a list "of people who received the bonuses, whether they paid them back or not." If the names were not provided "without restriction," Frank warned, he would ask the committee to vote to subpoena them.

Liddy said he would "comply with the law:" but was "concerned about the safety of our people."

He said he would give the names of the bonus recipients only on the basis of confidentiality. He read aloud threats that AIG employees had received, including one that suggested that all bonus recipients should be "executed with piano wire around their necks."

Another one read: "If the government can't do this properly, we the people will take it in our own hands and see that justice is done. I'm looking for all the CEOs' names, kids, where they live, etc."

Frank said he would consult with security officials, but that his request for the names would stand.

Rep. Scott Garrett of New Jersey, the senior Republican on the subcommittee, complained that the administration still has no strategy for disentangling itself from the insurance giant.

"Part of me wants to say to some of the loudest critics, 'What did you expect and why weren't you asking more questions before?' I would argue that the real outrage now is the $170 billion of taxpayer money that's been pumped into this company and to what effect," he said.

Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-N.Y., said there was a "tidal wave of rage" throughout the country.

Meanwhile, the agency that oversees AIG said that, while its criticism of the company's practices had sharpened over the past five years, it had failed to recognize the extent of the risk posed by the exotic financial instruments the insurance company offered, many of them tied to a housing market that had long been rising.

Scott Polakoff, acting director of the Office of Thrift Supervision, said regulators failed to accurately predict what would happen to AIG's so-called credit default swaps _ a form of insurance _ if housing values collapsed, as they have. "There are a lot of people walking around who failed to understand how bad the real estate market had gotten," he said.

AIG is under fire for $220 million in retention bonuses paid to employees in its troubled financial products division. The most recent payment of $165 million began to be paid last Friday.

The retention payments _ ranging from $1,000 to nearly $6.5 million _ were put together in early 2008, long before then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson asked Liddy to take over the company. Liddy, the retired former chief of Allstate Insurance Co., is not getting a bonus and is drawing only $1 a year in salary.

"No one knows better than I that AIG has been the recipient of generous amounts of governmental financial aid. We have been the beneficiary of the American people's forbearance and patience," he said. But he also said that "we have to continue managing our business as a business _ taking account of the cold realities of competition for customers, for revenues and for employees."

The clamor over compensation overshadowed AIG's weekend disclosure that it had paid out more than $90 billion of the federal aid to foreign and domestic banks, including some that had multibillion-dollar U.S. government bailouts of their own.

NEA suspends Newton hawker stall’s licence for overcharging tourist

SINGAPORE: Stall No. 43 (Tanglin’s Best BBQ Seafood Stall) at Singapore’s Newton Hawker Centre has had its licence suspended for three months for overcharging.

National Environment Agency (NEA) said it had investigated the incident of overcharging of American Michael Rigby who was billed a total of S$491, including S$239 for eight tiger prawns.

NEA said it suspended the licence because the stall has breached licensing conditions.

Diamond thieves pull off 100-million-dollar Paris heist

PARIS (AFP) - - Armed robbers pulled off one of the world's biggest jewellery heists at a famed Paris store, making off with 80 million euros (102 million dollars) in diamonds and valuables, investigators said Friday.

A gang of four thieves -- two of them disguised as women -- on Thursday stole nearly all the jewels on display at the Harry Winston boutique just off the Champs-Elysees avenue, which attracts a wealthy international clientele.

The heist was well-planned, a source from the investigating team told AFP. The men knew the names of some of the shop's employees and the location of some hidden storage cases for jewellery.

The robbers managed to elude the high-security surveillance system and burst into the boutique at 5:30 pm (1630 GMT), at the height of the holiday shopping season.

Brandishing weapons, they threatened some of the dozen employees and customers and herded them into a corner, while some of the staff suffered blows, according to investigators.

The loot initially estimated at up 62 million euros was revised early Friday to 80 million euros, making it by far the biggest jewellery heist yet in France.

Police said they were dealing with "major pros" who had meticulously planned their crime and knew the boutique's lay-out well, suggesting it may have been an inside job.

The thieves, who apparently were French-speaking, stuffed brooches, rings, necklaces and other finery in bags and quickly left, without firing a shot. The whole operation lasted just 15 minutes.

No leads were ruled out including the possibility that the robbers may have connections in eastern Europe, where the loot could be sold, contrary to western Europe where such high-value stolen goods would be quickly detected.

Police described the eastern European market as a "new El Dorado for traffickers" trying to get rid of high-end stolen goods.

Investigators were Friday questioning customers, employees and pedestrians and studying surveillance camera tapes for clues, while Harry Winston's head branch in New York said it was working closely with the French authorities.

"We are cooperating with the authorities in their investigation. Our first concern is the well-being of our employees," the company said in a statement.

The Harry Winston store on Avenue Montaigne, which specializes in ultra-luxury jewellery, was hit by another heist in October last year when armed robbers stole an estimated 10 million euros worth of valuables.

An insurance company offered a 500,000-dollar reward for information leading to the thieves' arrest but they were never found.

The US jewellery chain has sold precious stones to royal families and lent them to film stars for events such as the Cannes film festival or the Oscars in Hollywood.

Belgium holds the record for the world's biggest jewellery heist when diamonds worth 100 million euros or more were stolen on February 14, 2003 in Antwerp.

A 1.8-million euro necklace was stolen in June 2001 from the Alexandre Reza shop in Cannes on the French Riviera, followed a month later by a 3.8-million-euro heist at a Van Cleef and Arpels shop in the same city.

Among other notable robberies, three Paris shops were targeted in October 2001 by a conman posing as a rich Kuwaiti emir who managed to make off with 2.2 million euros in jewels.

Love handles increase death risk

WASHINGTON (AFP) - - A thick waist almost doubles the risk of premature death, a major European study has found, showing there's nothing lovely about love handles.

importantly, the risk is similar even when body mass index (BMI) fell within normal range, according to the authors of the study of 359,000 people aged 51.9 on average, including 65.4 percent women, appearing in Thursday's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

The research found that excess fat stored around the middle of the body was a major health risk even when people are not considered obese or even overweight by statistical BMI standards.

In fact, each five centimetre increase in waist size increased the risk of death by 17 percent in men and 13 percent in women.

"The most important result of our study is the finding that not just being overweight, but also the distribution of body fat, affects the risk of premature death of each individual," said Tobias Pischon, the lead author of the paper from the German Institute of Human Nutrition in Potsdam-Rehbr�cke.

The data should encourage physicians to routinely measure patients' waists as well as their BMI on routine office visits, according to the study carried out by the Imperial College London (GB), German Institute for Human Nutrition and other European participants.

"The good news is that you don't need to take an expensive test and wait ages for the result to assess this aspect of your health - it costs virtually nothing to measure your waist and hip size," said Elio Riboli, the European coordinator of the EPIC study from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Imperial College London.

"If you have a large waist, you probably need to increase the amount of exercise you do every day, avoid excessive alcohol consumption and improve your diet. This could make a huge difference in reducing your risk of an early death."

Flights resume as Thai protesters abandon airports

BANGKOK, (AFP) - - The first flight arrived at Bangkok's main airport Wednesday after anti-government protesters packed up and left, ending a week-long siege that crippled Thailand and stranded thousands of tourists.

The exodus came a day after the People's Alliance for Democracy claimed victory in its six-month campaign against Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, when a court barred him from politics and disbanded the ruling party.

Hundreds of yellow-clad demonstrators streamed out of the Suvarnabhumi international and Don Mueang domestic airports in cars, taxis and buses after the royalist PAD handed over control after ending its blockade.

But with the former government vowing to regroup and vote next week to choose Thailand's third premier in three months, there was little hope of long-term stability for the kingdom.

"We will come back when the nation needs us," said Somkiat Pongpaibul, a key leader of the PAD, which groups Bangkok's urban elite and middle classes, backed by elements from the military and the palace.

A Thai Airways flight from the resort isle of Phuket became the first plane to land at Suvarnabhumi for a week, with international services to Sydney, New Delhi, Narita, Frankfurt, Seoul and Copenhagen due later in the day.

"We will try and get everything back to normal as soon as possible," Airports of Thailand chief Vudhibhandhu Vichairatana told reporters at the airport.

More than 350,000 travellers were trapped in Thailand by the chaos, with governments around the world operating emergency flights to evacuate desperate tourists.

Damage from the occupation of the gleaming three-billion-dollar airport since November 25 had not yet been estimated, Vudhibhandhu said. Suvarnabhumi opened with much fanfare in 2006 and last year handled 41 million passengers.

AFP correspondents saw hundreds of protesters piling their belongings on private vehicles, cabs and coaches at both airports, and most were gone by the early afternoon.

The movement's co-founder, Chamlong Srimuang, hugged and shook hands with the chief of the airport authority at Suvarnabhumi before bowing down in front of a portrait of Thailand's much-revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

"Everybody came here because they love the king," said Neepirom Kunniam, 58, wearing the movement's trademark yellow clothes, which symbolise devotion to the monarchy.

A line of hundreds of protesters snaked through the departures area at the international airport as they got autographs from Chamlong and his PAD co-founder Sondhi Limthongkul.

Former ruling coalition members have vowed to form another government under a new banner after the toppling of Somchai, who was barred from politics for five years by the Constitutional Court in a vote fraud case.

Protesters accused Somchai's administration of acting as a proxy for exiled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a military coup in 2006, and of being hostile to the monarchy.

PAD protests led to the coup which toppled Thaksin and the group took to the streets again in May this year.

"In the next two weeks I think we will come again," said protester Pas Apinantpreeda.

Analysts said the developments would bring a brief respite until the remnants of the government tried to name a new premier in parliament next week, but would not solve the kingdom's underlying problems.

Acting Prime Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul said parliament would likely vote on a new premier on Monday or Tuesday.

The crisis in Southeast Asia's second biggest economy has caused international concern, especially after Bangkok was forced to postpone an ASEAN summit that was due to be held in December.

The United States said Tuesday it hoped for a resolution of the crisis while Japan said Thailand should "establish a stable government as soon as possible to restore calm."

Las Vegas Sands say Singapore casino on track

SINGAPORE, Oct 30 - Las Vegas Sands plans to open its Singapore casino by end-2009 as scheduled despite a report that the project will be delayed, a Singapore-based company executive said on Thursday.

"We continue to target the end of 2009 for the opening of Marina Bay Sands," George Tanasijevich, general manager of Marina Bay Sands, said in a statement.

His comments follow a report in the pro-government Straits Times newspaper on Thursday, which said the casino project was several months behind schedule due to construction issues and a shortage of labour.

According to the paper, event organisers said the casino had indicated that it would only accept bookings from April 2010.

Singapore legalised casino gaming in 2005 and licensed two multi-billion-dollar casino-resorts in a bid to attract more tourists and convention visitors.

The Marina Bay Sands is being built on reclaimed land near Singapore's central business district and is scheduled to open in late 2009. The second, Genting International's Resorts World at Sentosa, is slated for completion in 2010.

Resorts World may also see a delay in the opening of some of its facilities although a casino spokeswoman said it was "on track" for a "soft opening" in 2010, the paper said.

The two casinos have been hit by higher construction costs since construction began, causing Genting to revise its costs for Resorts World up 15 percent to S$6 billion last year.

SKorean actress found dead in apparent suicide

SEOUL, South Korea - A popular South Korean actress depressed after a divorce and distraught over online rumors was found dead Thursday in an apparent suicide, hours after she sent a text message saying "take care of my children no matter what happens."

Choi Jin-sil, 39, known as "The Nation's Actress," is believed to have hanged herself in the bathroom of her Seoul home, said Yang Jae-ho, chief investigator at Seoul's Seocho Police Station.
Choi had been depressed since her 2004 divorce and worried about how to care for her two young children, friends told police. She had been distraught after the suicide of a fellow actor she was rumored to have pressured about a loan, police said.
No suicide note was found. However, Choi sent an assistant two cell phone text messages Wednesday night asking her to "take care of my children no matter what happens" and telling her that "I'm sorry," the chief investigator said.
Choi's mother told police that the actress returned home drunk around midnight Wednesday, crying and denying the recent rumors, before going into the bathroom, Yang said.
Her mother woke the next morning to find the bathroom door locked and called for help, Yang said.
"Given the results of an examination showing no trace of physical trauma on her body, we concluded that it was a suicide," Yang told reporters. He said an autopsy and an investigation were under way.
The news shocked her fans, as well as stars and film directors at the Pusan International Film Festival, which opened Thursday in the southern beach town of Busan. A moment of silence was observed in Choi's honor at the opening ceremony.
Choi made her debut in the late 1980s, quickly becoming the nation's sweetheart and earning a reputation as a box-office draw. She also starred in prime time TV dramas.
The actress was preparing for the second season of a TV drama, "The Last Scandal of My Life," in which she played a woman who finds love with a top actor after a painful divorce.
Choi herself had gone through a difficult divorce. She had married baseball star Cho Sung-min in 2000, then a pitcher for the Japanese pro baseball team Yomiuri Giants, but they split in 2002 and divorced two years later.
The deterioration of their relationship became tabloid fodder, culminating in Cho's arrest for attacking her. Their children are in elementary school.
A friend said Choi worried constantly about raising the children and about her future as an actress, and repeatedly expressed her wish to die, Yang said. Her mother told police Choi was depressed after the divorce and had been taking a sedative, Yang said.
Rumors that she had lent money to actor and longtime friend Ahn Jae-hwan, who was found dead in his car in early September, upset the actress, friends and family said.
Choi denied loaning Ahn money and asked police to find out who was circulating the claims that Ahn killed himself after Choi pressured him to repay a large debt.
A securities firm employee and another suspect are under investigation for defamation in that case, Yang said.

NSman who died had not submitted medical certificate

SINGAPORE: Investigations into the death of full—time National Serviceman Joe Foo Wei Rong found that he had been given medical leave two days before he died but he did not inform officials about it.

The Defence Ministry said in a statement on Thursday that a medical certificate dated September 28 was found in Private Foo’s personal bunk cupboard after his death. The medical centre had no documentation of his medical certificate.
Soldiers are required to submit certifications of their medical conditions at the centre.
Private Foo had seen a doctor at the Singapore General Hospital on Sunday. He was supposed to rest from September 28 to 29 for "sprains and strains of the knee and leg", and to be given light duties for the subsequent four days.
It is not known why Private Foo did not report his medical condition, but investigations are currently underway and a full report is expected in eight weeks.
The former Singapore Polytechnic student died on Tuesday while doing chin—ups at Lim Chu Kang camp.
Friends and relatives remember Private Foo as an athletic young man who enjoyed basketball, and his death came as a shock to many who turned up at his wake on Thursday.
Private Foo is the third full—time National Serviceman to have died in camp this year. Recruit Andrew Cheah and Officer Cadet Clifton Lam suffered the same fate in June.
All three were former students at polytechnics where physical activities are not compulsory, unlike junior colleges where exercise is part of the curriculum.
Chairperson of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Affairs Indranee Rajah, who is also the MP of Tanjong Pagar GRC, said: "Obviously it needs to be studied more deeply and carefully, but to me, it does seem to me that before anybody goes in for NS, the preconditioning is important.
"And as far as possible, from secondary school, all the way to the time they enter National Service for BMT (Basic Military Training), it’s important that the levels of fitness should be maintained."
The polytechnics that were contacted said they have many sporting activities in place for students.
Singapore Polytechnic says an estimated 15 per cent of total student population take part in sports. Half of its 2007 graduating cohort sat for the National Physical Fitness Award tests, an increase from 35 per cent in the previous year.

Great Train Robbery (1963)

The Great Train Robbery is the name given to a £2.6 million train robbery committed on 8 August 1963 at Bridego Railway Bridge, Ledburn near Mentmore in Buckinghamshire, England.[1] The bulk of the stolen money was not recovered. This was probably the largest robbery by value, in British history, until the Securitas depot robbery of 2006 in Kent.

Robbery
The Glasgow to London travelling post office (TPO) train was stopped by a red light at Sears Crossing. The signals had been tampered with, unknown to the driver, with a glove placed over the green light and a six-volt battery temporarily powering the red one. The co-driver David Whitby went to call the signalman only to find the telephone cables had been cut. Upon returning to the train, he was thrown down the embankment of the railway track.[2]
One problem the robbers encountered was that the diesel train was different from the local trains, making it difficult to operate. One of the robbers had spent months befriending railway staff and familiarising himself with the layout and operation but it was decided instead to use an experienced train driver - later referred to as 'Stan Agate' - to drive the train from the stopping point at the signals to the bridge after uncoupling the unnecessary carriages. However, the train driver was unable to operate the train and it was quickly decided that the original driver, Jack Mills, would move the train down the track. The high-value carriage was decoupled from the others and driven a further half a mile to Bridego Bridge where the robbers' Land Rovers lay in wait. Stan Agate's participation in the robbery was Ronnie Biggs' only task and when it became obvious that they were useless they were banished to the awaiting ex-army truck to help load the mail bags.
A 15-member gang, led by Bruce Reynolds and including Biggs, Charlie Wilson, Jimmy Hussey, Roy James, Jimmy White, Tommy Wisbey, Gordon Goody and Buster Edwards, one of whom was an ex-British Army paratrooper, boarded the train and began to unload the money sacks into waiting vehicles on the road below the bridge. Although no guns were used, the train driver was hit on the head with an iron bar, causing a black eye and facial bruising. The assailant was one of two members of the gang who was never identified. Frank Williams (at the time a Detective Inspector) claims to have traced the man, but he could not be charged because of lack of evidence. Mills recovered but had constant trauma headaches the rest of his life. He died in 1970 from leukaemia.
£2,631,784 was stolen in used £1, £5 and £10 notes, the equivalent of £40 million (US $80 million) adjusted for 2006 inflation.

Investigation and capture
After receiving an anonymous tip-off, police went to Leatherslade Farm near Oakley, Buckinghamshire five days later. There they found fingerprints of the robbers - including those on a Monopoly board game, used after the robbery but with real money.
The first gang member caught was Roger Cordrey and his friend who helped him to conceal his share of the stolen money, William Boal. They were lying low in a rented furnished flat above a florist shop in Wimborne Road, Moordown, Bournemouth. Bournemouth CID were tipped-off by police widow Ethel Clark, when Boal and Cordey paid rent for a garage, three months' up-front, all in used 10 shilling notes. Their arrests were made in Tweedale Road off Castle Lane West.[4]
Thirteen of the gang members were caught. They were tried, sentenced on 16 April 1964 and imprisoned.
Ronnie Biggs escaped from prison 15 months into his sentence, with a considerable amount of the money. He escaped while he was outside training. Biggs scaled a 30ft wall with three other prisoners using a ladder thrown from the outside during the prisoners' afternoon exercise. Biggs climbed the ladder and lowered himself into a waiting van. They were driven from the prison in three cars. He fled to Paris, where he acquired new identity papers and underwent plastic surgery. In 1970, he quietly moved to Adelaide, Australia, where he worked as a builder and lived a relatively normal life. He was tipped off by persons unknown and moved to Melbourne, later escaping to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after police discovered his Melbourne address. Biggs could not be extradited because the UK did not benefit from reciprocity of extradition to Brazil, a condition for the Brazilian process of extradition. Additionally, he was about to father a Brazilian child. As a result he lived openly in Rio for many years, untouchable by British authorities.
Charlie Wilson escaped in August 1964[5] and took up residence outside Montreal, Canada on Rigaud Mountain. In the upper-middle-class neighbourhood, where the large, secluded properties are surrounded by trees, Wilson lived under the name Ronald Alloway, a name borrowed from a Fulham shopkeeper. He joined an exclusive golf club and participated in his local community activities. It was only when he invited his brother-in-law over from the UK for Christmas that Scotland Yard was able to track him down and recapture him. They waited three months before making their move, in hopes that Wilson would lead them to Reynolds, the last unapprehended suspect. Wilson was arrested in February 1968. Many in Rigaud petitioned to allow his wife and five daughters to stay in the Montreal area.

Aftermath
In May 2001 Biggs, 71, unable to meet mounting medical costs in Brazil after three strokes, voluntarily returned to England. His son, Michael Biggs, said in a press release that contrary to some press reports, Biggs has not returned to the UK simply to receive health care. According to Michael, health care was available in Brazil and he had many friends and supporters who would certainly have contributed to any such expenses. Biggs' stated desire was to "walk into a Margate pub as an Englishman and buy a pint of bitter".[6] Biggs was aware that he would be arrested and jailed. After detention and a short court hearing he was sent back to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.
The story of Ronald "Buster" Edwards, who fled to Mexico but later surrendered to authorities, was dramatised in the 1988 film, Buster, which starred Phil Collins in the title role. Edwards became a flower seller outside Waterloo Station on release from prison. He committed suicide in 1994.
One of the post office carriages involved is preserved at Nene Valley Railway at Peterborough Cambridgeshire, and is being restored. The locomotive was no: D326 (later no: 40126). It was involved in a number of serious operating incidents throughout its operational life.[citation needed]
The robbery was investigated by Detective Chief Superintendent Jack Slipper of the Metropolitan Police (known in the press as "Slipper of the Yard"), who became so involved with its aftermath that he continued to hunt many of the escaped robbers in retirement. He believed Biggs should not be released after returning to the UK in 2001 and he often appeared in the media to comment on any news item connected to the robbery before his death on 24 August 2005 at the age of 81.
As a result of this robbery, the British Railways rule book was amended. If stopped by a red signal drivers had previously been required to contact the signaller by telephone - requiring them to leave the driving cab. After the change, drivers of mail trains were no longer allowed to leave the cab at any red signals and were to always keep their cab doors locked. These rules remained in force until the retirement of mail trains in the UK

Global markets turbulent, but Wall Street rebounds

NEW YORK (AFP) - - World stock markets saw heavy turbulence for a second straight day on Tuesday, with investors rattled by fears of a widening financial crisis, but Wall Street rallied in a volatile session.

Markets had been under pressure amid fears of a collapse of American International Group, a global insurance giant with one trillion dollars in assets, whose failure could lead to a financial calamity, according to analysts.
But traders in New York turned positive on reports of a possible rescue of AIG and appeared encouraged by a Federal Reserve decision to hold interest rates steady despite the recent market turmoil -- a move seen as a sign of confidence in the economy.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average shook off early losses and rallied 1.30 percent to 11,059.02. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite rose 1.28 percent to 2,207.90 and the broad Standard & Poor's 500 index vaulted 1.75 percent to 1,213.60.
The wild action came as the market followed the fate of AIG, feared to be the next domino to fall in the financial crisis after Lehman Brothers.
"The market couldn't decide whether to buy low or keep panicking," said Elizabeth Harrow at Schaeffer's Investment Research.
AIG shares plunged more than 70 percent at the open, and then climbed back to show small gains, before slipping at the end of the day. The shares lost 21 percent after a 60 percent plunge Monday.
The market action came after heavy losses in Asia that spread to European exchanges a day after US investment giant Lehman Brothers stunned the market with a bankruptcy filing.
In London, the FTSE 100 index closed down 3.43 percent to 5,025.6, having been down more than four percent at one stage to breach support at 5,000 points for the first time since 2005.
In Paris, the CAC 40 shed 1.96 percent to 4,087.40 and in Frankfurt, the DAX was off 1.63 percent at 5,965.17, with both markets down more than three percent earlier in the day.
Elsewhere in Europe, losses were widespread, with some of the smaller markets among the worst hit.
In Russia, the main RTS stock market suspended trading after falling by more than 11.47 percent, a spokeswoman said, following a move by the number two Micex bourse to do the same.
With nerves jangling, the US Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, Bank of England and Bank of Japan together injected 210 billion dollars into the money markets on Tuesday to boost liquidity.
The Fed appeared to disappoint the market by holds its base lending rate at 2.0 percent, defying widespread market expectations for a quarter-point cut to help get credit flowing. US stocks slumped initially before rallying.
"Did the Fed do the right thing? We will know the answer to that only in time, but it was a reasonable decision," said Joel Naroff at Naroff Economic Advisors.
"As I have noted on a number of occasions, the problem is not the level of rates but liquidity and the willingness to lend."
Some were befuddled by the Fed announcement.
"To read their statement, you would never know the sky has fallen in on Wall Street," said Ian Shepherdson, chief US economist at High Frequency Economics.
"In our view this statement is either very brave or very reckless."
John Ryding at RDQ Economics said the rally was inspired not by the Fed decision on rates but by reports that the central bank was working to stave off a potentially catastrophic collapse at AIG.
He said the rally came "because of a perception that the Fed has some other card up their sleeve on AIG."
Some reports said a crisis meeting at the New York Fed was working on a plan to provide the troubled insurance giant with a short-term loan of 75 billion dollars to stave off bankruptcy.
David Kotok, chief investment officer at Cumberland Advisors, said the Fed is compelled to act to avert a calamity.
"This has the appearance of a cascade or a contagion," he said. "Failure of Lehman has created contagion because of counter-party risk that was not contained by the Fed. Failure of AIG will make this much worse."
He added that "stemming a contagion is the job of the central bank ..And it must apply its lender of last resort function."
In other global markets, Brazil's Bovespa index rebounded with a 1.68 percent gain while Canada's S&P/TSX index fell 0.22 percent.
Across Asia on Tuesday, officials called emergency meetings as trading screens went red on the heels of the biggest one-day point loss for Wall Street's Dow Jones index since the September 11 attacks.
Japanese shares dropped almost five percent and Hong Kong shed 5.4 percent.
Seoul shares closed 6.1 percent lower while the South Korean currency, the won, fell 4.3 percent against the dollar, its biggest daily drop in a decade.

Not all 6 new ERP gantries need to be switched on in November

SINGAPORE : Not all of the six new Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantries need to be switched on in November. Transport Minister Raymond Lim offered this little nugget of hope to motorists at a talk to the Press Club on Friday.

ERP was an obvious hot topic at the talk, especially as it comes after rates went up at about half of all gantries in the central business and shopping areas, while five new gantries along the Singapore River were added in July.

Explaining the rationale, the minister said such road pricing was a measure of last resort.

He said: "We recognise that such system—wide changes will have a significant impact on people’s lives. So let’s roll it out in phases, and as we roll it out in phases, we hope we might end up doing much less than we have to."

He added that since the July changes, speeds have picked up on many of these roads.

Thus, not all six new gantries that the Land Transport Authority had previously announced would be switched on in November, may have to become operational.

These are the ones along Serangoon Road, Commonwealth Avenue, Jalan Bukit Merah, Alexandra Road, AYE—westbound near Alexandra Road and PIE—westbound near Eunos.

There was also a nugget of good news for public transport commuters — bus passengers may get higher transfer rebates. Details are expected to be announced next week.

This means the majority of bus passengers who make one or more transfers stand to benefit.

During question time, Mr Lim was asked if fares for children could be waived, in light of Singapore’s family—friendly thrust.

The answer was that it boiled down to a question of government intervention and cross—subsidies — a path it is not likely to take.

SINGAPORE : Sentosa is aiming to bring in the crowds with a number of new tourist attractions next year.

Among the new attractions that will be open in the first quarter of next year is a water sports centre, with a fleet of charter boats.

Also in the pipeline is a S$15 million simulated wave surfing facility, where surfers can ride a 10—foot barrelling wave.

Indoor sky diving will be offered in the second quarter.

Sentosa Leisure Group’s new CEO, Mike Barclay, expects the new attractions and the opening of the integrated resort to double the number of visitors annually.

He said: "In terms of the number of guests we have coming to the island, we are currently about 6.1 million, 6.2 million a year. We see that increasing to as high as 15 million by the year 2015.

"The Resorts World at Sentosa is coming on line at 2010 and we will be progressively opening, and that itself is going to attract 9 million, 10 million (visitors) a year."

The day MM Lee censored himself

SINGAPORE: Few, if any, would dispute that the most dramatic of the 43 annual National Day Rally speeches was the one in 1971. It was the first one telecast live. Even more extraordinarily, it went on air without prior notice.

The previous five rallies were closed—door sessions. Then, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew wanted to talk candidly to political, business and grassroot leaders without having to pull his punches. Many of the things he needed to tell his people were highly—sensitive matters in those troubled times.

Our neighbours, particularly Malaysia — from which Singapore was expelled in 1965 — could have been upset with varying degrees of justification.

Mr Lee did not want to exercise self—censorship at National Day Rallies.

Because of the presence of some content that was potentially offensive or explosive, Singapore media could not report what was said until days later, when edited versions of transcripts were issued for publication.

Why, then, the apparently sudden decision by Mr Lee to go live at the National Day Rally on Aug 15, 1971? Even his closest Cabinet colleagues did not know of the totally unexpected departure from established practice.

How the producer lived to tell the tale

Mr Ananda Perera, 69, a retired senior executive of the then—Singapore Broadcasting Corporation, tells an enthralling inside story about that night:

After I read Peter Lim’s deja vu recall of ’the night it first went live ...’ (Weekend TODAY, Aug 23—24), I felt I should share my experience.

I was the producer of the live telecast of that historic National Day Rally speech. The usual ’drill’ for such occasions was as follows:

PM is met on arrival at the car porch of the National Theatre (now demolished, at the foot of Fort Canning Hill). The producer follows PM to the make—up room for any last—minute instructions.

On that historic evening, I was asked by PM Lee Kuan Yew what was on local channels from 7.30 pm onwards. I told him. Then he asked me an unexpected question: What is on RTM channels? (RTM was Radio and Television Malaysia.)

Fortunately, having worked with him on many such productions, I was prepared. I told him what was on RTM 1 and 2. Then he reached into his pocket and took out a cutting of the TV programme listings for the day to counter—check!

This is how prepared you must be when you deal with Mr Lee Kuan Yew. He asked me whether we can go live. I said yes.

He instructed me to make multi—lingual announcements on both radio and TV by fading all programmes on air to blank. He also told me to ensure that we make Malay, Tamil, Mandarin and English announcements to ensure that the audience at the National Theatre was kept informed.

We did so.

I immediately rushed to the OB (outside broadcast) van in the car park to call my director, the late Mrs Wong—Lee Siok Tin. This is what I told her: "Please don’t ask any questions. PM has instructed that we fade all radio and TV programmes on air (and make) the announcement that we are going to live telecast/broadcast PM’s National Day Rally speech at the National Theatre."

There was a gasp at the other end of the line. I told Mrs Wong to just go ahead as I had a number of things to do, given that we hardly had 10 minutes to airtime!

Just 10 minutes into the live broadcast, Cabinet Secretary, Wong Chooi Sen tapped on our OB van door to ask me: "Hey, Ananda, Dr Goh Keng Swee (then the Defence Minister) wants to know whether you are absolutely certain that PM instructed you to broadcast live!"

Though I died a thousand deaths at that moment, I shouted a firm YES and told him not to disturb me.

After the broadcast I rushed back to meet PM at the make—up room. He asked me whether the broadcast went live without technical hitches. I said it went flawlessly. He said ’good’ and I lived to tell the tale!

Why did he have the sensation of dying a thousand deaths?

"We had only four cameras set up; that’s really not enough," Mr Perera recalls. "And we had no script!" The veteran TV executive explains one of live telecasts’ trade secrets. With a script, the TV producer seated at his console will know what the speaker is about to say and whether there will be a comment on or acknowledgement of someone’s presence in the audience.

The producer can then decide whether and when to pan one or more of the cameras to bring the person on screen.

Without a script, the producer has to rely on flair, experience and instinctive judgment to direct the camera crew and decide what to show on screen at any and every moment of the telecast.

"Supposing I have on screen a close—up of a Cabinet minister or some other VVIP and the PM says at that exact moment something disparaging or highly critical ...!" Mr Perera does not finish that sentence. With the shock and awe in his voice, there is no need to.

Why PM Lee did it in 1971

Weekend Xtra asked Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew why he decided to go live with the 1971 National Day Rally speech.

"I had been thinking of reaching beyond the grassroots leaders when candidly discussing the problems of the time,” Mr Lee says. “Since I could leave out the ultra—sensitive parts to avoid annoying our neighbours, I decided to go live."

Why was the live telecast put out in such an urgent fashion that even Dr Goh reportedly did not know in advance?

"I decided it late, but had been mulling it over for some time."

Were you still weighing the pros and cons as you were being driven to the National Theatre?

"It was not a life—and—death decision because all it meant was deleting a few subjects from my notes."

Mr Lee has packed so much into those succinct answers.

The problems of the time were many and seemingly intractable. Just six years earlier, as Mr Lee says in volume two of his memoirs From Third World To First, "we were given no choice but to leave" Malaysia.

"The years after 1965 were hectic and filled with anxiety, as we struggled to find our feet," he says in the book. "We were relieved when we found in 1971 that we had created enough jobs to avoid heavy unemployment even though the British withdrew their forces from Singapore."

But Mr Lee and his Cabinet colleagues were not yet "confident that we could make it on our own".

During the 1969 Malaysian election campaign, the governing "Alliance leaders made wild and groundless allegations that Singapore leaders had interfered in their politics", according to Mr Lee in his book.

Deadly race riots broke out in Kuala Lumpur on May 13, three days after the 1969 polls. A bit of the racial violence spilt over to Singapore, necessitating fast and firm counter—measures by government.

"The Utusan Melayu (a Malay—language newspaper based in Malaysia and which also circulated in Singapore then) became even more pro—Malay and openly hostile towards the Singapore government, belittling our efforts to help Singapore Malays," Mr Lee says in the book.

According to Mr Lee in the book, there was only one Malaysian government leader who was not prejudiced against Singapore. He was Deputy Prime Minister Tun Dr Ismail, who visited Singapore in April 1971 and "we had a good talk".

That held out hopes if not expectations of an improvement in cross—Causeway relations.

But it was early days yet when NDR came around four months later. Relations between the two countries were still tense and tender. A wrong word or phrase from either side could inflame passions of the negative kind.

Hence, Dr Goh must have been horrified when he heard from his seat at the National Theatre that the PM’s speech was going on air live. For Mr Lee was and is not known as one who minces his words.

Mr Lee now reveals that he exercised self—censorship, excising from his notes — there was no prepared text — things that he needed to tell Singaporeans yet would be ultra—sensitive should our neighbours get to hear of them.

It was a momentous decision! Singapore’s first Prime Minister censored himself, or edited himself, and launched one of the high points of the Singaporean political year: The annual National Day Rally live telecast.

So what did then PM Lee say in 1971?

Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s off—the—cuff speech to his audience of about 3,500 people started with a brief explanation of his decision to go on air live: "We cannot go on doing the things we are doing unless not only you but a lot of other people outside know the raison d’etre, the background, the reasons, the problems..."

Then he touched on the progress Singapore had made and thought aloud about leadership transition. He elaborated on the need for long—term planning; Singapore’s security and sovereignty; US President Richard Nixon’s forthcoming ceremonial visit to China and the lesson from it — expect the unexpected; the Vietnam war; the Commonwealth Five comprising Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore.

"Being a small country in a strategic position ... we should try and avoid being sacrificed as pawns," Mr Lee said.

He outlined Singapore’s economic need to "go on from physical servicing to brain servicing"; the inevitability of letting in foreign workers; and "supposing the worst happens — sometimes I get glimpses of what may go wrong".

So the government prepared for worst—case scenarios. "And that’s what we are trying to do and never mind what the newspapers tell you," Mr Lee said. "If they know as much as we do, they should be running Singapore, isn’t it? Particularly those who (have) just come up from the university."

Mr Lee ended his speech by saying "we will see this place safe and secure ... make use of the time, be it five years, be it six, be it 10".

Does that strike you as a less—than—confident Lee Kuan Yew 37 years ago? Well, that was 1971 and those were uncertain times. Minister Mentor Lee is now much more confident about Singapore’s future.

SINGAPORE (AFP) - - A US nuclear-powered submarine could have leaked radioactive water during a Singapore stop in September 2006, Singapore's Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean said Monday.

Speaking in parliament, Teo said the United States informed Singapore this month that the USS Houston had been leaking trace amounts of radioactive water since June 2006.

"This suggested that the USS Houston could have been leaking during her port call at Changi Naval Base in September 2006," Teo said in response to a parliamentary question.

Singapore had asked the United States for information after reports in early August said the USS Houston could have been leaking radioactive water during a port call in Japan in March this year, he said.

US tests showed the amount of radioactivity that could have leaked from the submarine during its Singapore stop was too small to pose any risk to public health, said Teo.

"To put things into perspective, the US indicated that this was less than the amount of radioactivity found in a common smoke detector, and would not have any adverse effect on human health, marine life or the environment," the defence minister said.

Singapore also conducted its own investigations which also showed public safety had not been affected by the leak at Changi Naval Base, he said.

BEIJING: The controversial decision by the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) not to extend its team manager’s tenure hangs over the paddlers’ triumphant return to Singapore from the Beijing Olympics.

The controversy started when the coach of table tennis player Gao Ning was absent from his match during the Olympic Games. STTA’s president, Lee Bee Wah, had expressed unhappiness over the absence and said action would be taken after the Olympic Games.

The team later explained that Gao Ning’s coach fell ill at the last minute. Another coach overseeing Singapore player Yangzi’s match was asked to look after Gao Ning, but Yangzi’s match started late and overlapped Gao Ning’s match entirely.

When contacted, Chef de Mission Tan Eng Liang said he was satisfied with the team’s explanation and had considered the matter closed.

Singapore’s table tennis team manager, Antony Lee, declined to be interviewed on camera, saying he was busy preparing for Sunday night’s Olympic closing ceremony. Ms Lee also declined a camera interview, saying whatever else she had to say could complicate matters.

But both did speak to the Channel NewsAsia’s news team over the phone. Mr Lee said he was not informed by the STTA president about the decision not to renew his contract, and he had learnt it from someone else.

Mr Lee, who was seconded from the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) to manage the table tennis team, said he would return to the SSC after his contract ends with STTA.

He added that he is proud of the team’s achievements in Beijing and would hold his head high after helping to contribute to Singapore’s Olympic silver medal performance.

Ms Lee, on the other hand, told Channel NewsAsia that the decision not to renew Mr Lee’s contract when it expires at the end of August was made before the team had left for the Olympics.

As for the changes in the team management structure, the association is looking to recruit a CEO and a technical director. Once these positions are filled, STTA will decide who the next team manager will be.

BEIJING (AFP) - - South Korean boxer Baik Jong-Sub has been forced to sacrifice his dream of an Olympic medal after being told he could die if he continued to fight, according to reports here on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old Baik has been suffering from chest pains, a legacy of the damage from an earlier bout, and has pulled out of his lightweight quarter-final against Hrachik Javakhyan of Armenia.

"After checking with both team and local hospital officials, we figured he should no longer fight because it could threaten his life," Baik's coach, Chun In-ho told the Yonhap news agency.

Chun said his fighter's respiratory organs are believed to have been damaged during an earlier bout, allowing air to penetrate into his cardiovascular system.

Baik, who finished fifth in the 60kg division in Athens four years ago, defeated Pichai Sayota of Thailand to earn a place in the quarter-finals.

"Baik wanted to fight, but we stopped him from doing so," Chun added.

Feng shui masters turn 'wheel of fortune' in Singapore's favour

SINGAPORE, Aug 9, 2008 (AFP) - Officials in Singapore have changed the direction of the world's biggest observation wheel because feng shui masters said it was taking good fortune away from the city, a report said Saturday.

The Singapore Flyer, which opened earlier this year, had originally revolved so that it rose to face the business district and went down overlooking the sea, the Strait Times newspaper said.

However, masters of the ancient Chinese art of geomancy convinced the wheel's management to reverse it so that it was not taking fortune away from the city.

"A number of feng shui masters had approached us to tell us that the Flyer is on the perfect site to pick up the good qi (energy) flowing into Singapore, but it was going in the wrong direction," said Florian Bollen, the Singapore Flyer's chairman.

"The Flyer was going against the sun and taking fortune away from Singapore."

Bollen likened the change to the "completion of a perfect movie" to give a better story, but added that it cost the company a "six figure sum," the report said.

For visitors now riding one of the wheel's 28 air-conditioned capsules, their view starts with beaches and housing estates in the east and culminates with a vista of the business centre.

At 165 metres (545 feet), or 42 storeys, the Singapore Flyer is 30 metres higher than Britain's London Eye, said builders Great Wheel Corp.

Despite being a modern city Singapore is a largely ethnic Chinese nation, where traditions still hold sway.

Police said they received a call at 4.10pm about the Chinese man who was lying motionless on the ground.

Paramedics who arrived at the scene pronounced the man dead at around 4.40pm. He reportedly had some abrasions on his left elbow.

Before the parade proper, colourful, pyrotechnic displays greeted spectators, and it was the first time organisers have introduced a symphony of lights before sundown.

SBS Transit, SMRT submit applications for fare adjustments

SINGAPORE : The wheels are in motion for another round of public transport fare hikes. Singapore’s two public transport operators, SBS Transit and SMRT, have submitted their applications to the Public Transport Council (PTC) for fare adjustments.

However, both companies would not give specifics as to the quantum requested.

SBS Transit and SMRT attributed the need for a fare increase to soaring energy and fuel prices.

SMRT said even a maximum fare adjustment of 3 per cent will not fully mitigate the inflationary pressures.

The company said its energy costs rose by 18 per cent to nearly S$90 million due mainly to higher electricity and diesel prices.

Diesel cost for buses amounted to more than S$42 million, 17 per cent higher than the last financial year.

SBS Transit said it is proposing to keep concession, children and students fares unchanged.

While the new fare formula allows for the maximum adjustment to be capped at 3 per cent, the PTC has said that any increase this year is likely to be less than the 1.8 per cent hike imposed last year.

Bus fares went up by 1 to 2 cents last October, while train fares remained unchanged, because the PTC deemed that SMRT had healthy profits last year.

The PTC will decide on the adjustment in September, and the new fares will take effect in October.

Separately, the Competition Commission of Singapore has rejected the Singapore School Transport Association’s application to impose a fuel surcharge and the need for a collective price recommendation.

It said guidelines restrict independent pricing decisions, which is against free competition. However, the commission has no objections to fare increases, so long as it is decided on individually by bus operators.

It added that it is monitoring the situation and will launch an investigation if it has reasons to suspect that prices are being coordinated among the school bus operators.

SINGAPORE: Ren Ci Hospital and Medicare Centre, where funds were allegedly misappropriated, has tightened its internal procedures and systems to ensure accountability.

The charity’s chairman Chua Thian Poh, speaking at a news conference on Thursday, also revealed the organisation has lost about 12 per cent of its regular donors since news of the alleged fraud broke last November.

Since the inquiry, 334 of about 2,700 people who donated via a monthly automatic GIRO deduction scheme, have terminated their donation.

Average monthly GIRO donations totalled S$62,000 before an inquiry into the charity began. The amount dropped to about S$54,000 after its Institution of a Public Character (IPC) status expired, which means the charity has lost the right to collect tax—exempt donations.

The charity, however, said the construction for its new hospital is on track, with plans to operate by year’s end. The new hospital is located at Irrawaddy Road. It is expected to provide sub—acute care, community hospital service, day rehabilitation and Traditional Chinese Medicine services.

Thursday’s news conference came two days after Ren Ci’s former head, Venerable Shi Ming Yi, was charged in court for alleged forgery, conspiracy and misappropriation of charity funds.

Venerable Ming Yi, whose actual name is Goh Kah Heng, is out on a S$200,000 bail. He is due back in court on August 4.

Ren Ci Hospital and Medicare Centre is one of the largest charities in Singapore. It provides medical and step—down care for the needy.

At Ren Ci’s charity TV shows, daring stunts by Venerable Ming Yi had moved many to donate. Between December 2006 and June last year, the charity collected S$9.6 million from the shows and regular donors.

But after the authorities stepped in to investigate the 46—year—old monk for the alleged crimes, the charity show was canned and donations dropped by some S$8 million to slightly over S$1 million between December 2007 to June this year.

Now, the charity’s management wants to restore public confidence. Committees have been set up and they are looking at areas like corporate governance and stricter internal audits.

Cheques have to have two groups of signatories instead of individual approvals, and the chairman or vice—chairman has to approve them if they are above S$5,000.

The charity has also implemented a whistle—blowing policy.

Chairman Chua said: "We have come up with some regulation on checks and balances, and approval system and for corporate governance. Of course, we’re trying to be more transparent and even (have) a more independent director on the board.

"We will ensure... that all these money coming in, every dollar and cent in future, will be spent on the patients. Most of our patients are suffering from multiple chronic illnesses and they need a lot of medical and nursing care. So we hope the public will continue to support us to take care of these poor and sick patients."

The charity also wants to reassure the public that its current reserve of S$28.7 million is intact and not affected by the latest incident. This amount can last the charity some 22 months in the worst—case scenario if it is cut off from the Health Ministry’s grants and public donations.

"From now onwards, we will be more prudent... all the mistakes which we have made, we will correct them," said Mr Chua.

The charity organisation is working with the Health Ministry to appoint a new chief executive officer soon to replace Venerable Ming Yi.

Despite the latest setback, the charity says morale among its over 300 staff is still high.

SYDNEY (AFP) - A shark was found in a swimming pool at one of Sydney's most popular beaches Friday, apparently swept into the baths by a freak wave.

Cronulla Surf Lifesaving Club spokeswoman Robyn Cole said fisheries officers netted the shark and released it back into the sea unharmed shortly after members of the public reported its presence in the pool Friday morning.

"It was quite calm, just swimming happily up and down at one end of the pool," she told AFP.

"It's funny, though, because we have swimmers who come here at 6am every morning to do laps. It's still dark then and they mustn't have even noticed it was there."

Cole said the shark must have been swept into the pool overnight by a large wave.

"It's the first time we've had a shark in the pool," she said. "We've had seals sunbaking there before, and get dolphin at the beach all the time, but I've never heard of a shark getting caught in a pool before."

The one-metre (3.3 foot) shark turned up in a rock pool situated next to the open ocean at Cronulla beach.

'World's oldest blogger' dies in Australia

SYDNEY (AFP) - An Australian woman described as the world's oldest Internet blogger has died at the age of 108 after posting a final message about singing "a happy song" in her nursing home.

Olive Riley "passed away peacefully on July 12 and will be mourned by thousands of Internet friends and hundreds of descendants and other relatives," a note on her website said.

Riley had posted more than 70 entries on her blog since February last year, sharing her thoughts on modern life and her experiences living through the entire 20th century.

Born on October 20 1899, she lived through two world wars and raised three children while doing various jobs, including ranch cook and barmaid.

In her final post on June 26, she wrote: "I can't believe I've been here in this nursing home for more than a week.

"How the days have flown, even though I've been in bed most of the time. I still feel weak, and can't shake off that bad cough.

"Penny, who's in the next bed to mine, had a visit one day this week from her daughter, who's a professional singer. Guess what happened! She and I sang a happy song, as I do every day, and before long we were joined by several nurses, who sang along too. It was quite a concert!"

Riley's blog, initially on www.allaboutolive.com.au and more recently at http://worldsoldestblogger.blogspot.com, was "mind-blowing to her," her great grandson Darren Stone said.

"She had people communicating with her from as far away as Russia and America on a continual basis, not just once in a while," he told the national AAP news agency.

"She enjoyed the notoriety -- it kept her mind fresh."

Watermelon yields Viagra-like effects

LUBBOCK, Texas - A slice of cool, fresh watermelon is a juicy way to top off a Fourth of July cookout and one that researchers say has effects similar to Viagra but don't necessarily expect it to keep the fireworks going all night long.

Watermelons contain an ingredient called citrulline that can trigger production of a compound that helps relax the body's blood vessels, similar to what happens when a man takes Viagra, said scientists in Texas, one of the nation's top producers of the seedless variety.

Found in the flesh and rind of watermelons, citrulline reacts with the body's enzymes when consumed in large quantities and is changed into arginine, an amino acid that benefits the heart and the circulatory and immune systems.

"Arginine boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, the same basic effect that Viagra has, to treat erectile dysfunction and maybe even prevent it," said Bhimu Patil, a researcher and director of Texas A&M's Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center. "Watermelon may not be as organ-specific as Viagra, but it's a great way to relax blood vessels without any drug side effects."

Todd Wehner, who studies watermelon breeding at North Carolina State University, said anyone taking Viagra shouldn't expect the same result from watermelon.
"It sounds like it would be an effect that would be interesting but not a substitute for any medical treatment," Wehner said.

The nitric oxide can also help with angina, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems, according to the study, which was paid for by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
More citrulline _ about 60 percent _ is found in watermelon rind than in the flesh, Patil said, but that can vary. But scientists may be able to find ways to boost the concentrations in the flesh, he said.

Citrulline is found in all colors of watermelon and is highest in the yellow-fleshed types, said Penelope Perkins-Veazie, a USDA researcher in Lane, Okla.
She said Patil's research is valid, but with a caveat: One would need to eat about six cups of watermelon to get enough citrulline to boost the body's arginine level.
"The problem you have when you eat a lot of watermelon is you tend to run to the bathroom more," Perkins-Veazie said.

Watermelon is a diuretic and was a homeopathic treatment for kidney patients before dialysis became widespread.
Another issue is the amount of sugar that much watermelon would spill into the bloodstream _ a jolt that could cause cramping, Perkins-Veazie said.
Patil said he would like to do future studies on how to reduce the sugar content in watermelon.
The relationship between citrulline and arginine might also prove helpful to those who are obese or suffer from type-2 diabetes. The beneficial effects _ among them the ability to relax blood vessels, much like Viagra does _ are beginning to be revealed in research.

Citrulline is present in other curcubits, like cucumbers and cantaloupe, at very low levels, and in the milk protein casein. The highest concentrations of citrulline are found in walnut seedlings, Perkins-Veazie said.
"But they're bitter and most people don't want to eat them," she said.

Sixth seed Roddick than joined the scrapheap when he lost 6-7 (5/7), 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) to Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic.

"She played better, served and returned better and on grass they are the important elements," admitted Sharapova after slumping to her worst defeat in six visits.

"She had nothing to lose. I was far too tentative. My game wasn't there and she took advantage of it."

Kudryavtseva, who now plays China's Peng Shuai, then added insult to injury by revealing the frosty relationship between Sharapova and many of the other Russian women on tour.

"I don't know her well. I think I'm quite sure no one on the tour knows Maria well because she's not a very talkative girl and not very outgoing," said Kudryavtseva.

Japanese woman caught living in man's closet

TOKYO - A homeless woman who sneaked into a man's house and lived undetected in his closet for a year was arrested in Japan after he became suspicious when food mysteriously began disappearing.

Police found the 58-year-old woman Thursday hiding in the top compartment of the man's closet and arrested her for trespassing, police spokesman Hiroki Itakura from southern Kasuya town said Friday.

The resident of the home installed security cameras that transmitted images to his mobile phone after becoming puzzled by food disappearing from his kitchen over the past several months.

One of the cameras captured someone moving inside his home Thursday after he had left, and he called police believing it was a burglar. However, when they arrived they found the door locked and all windows closed.

"We searched the house ... checking everywhere someone could possibly hide," Itakura said. "When we slid open the shelf closet, there she was, nervously curled up on her side."

The woman told police she had no place to live and first sneaked into the man's house about a year ago when he left it unlocked.

She had moved a mattress into the small closet space and even took showers, Itakura said, calling the woman "neat and clean."

My mom only had one eye.. I hated her... she was such an

I called for a meeting with the group of numboys going to the ns this year right after the corporate meeting on monday.

I was addressing a few issues with them and at the end of the meeting I told them this.

Treasure the friendship and network they have built over the years at NUM, for I don't think there will be anymore group in the world could provide such a sincere environment for people to build such a solid friendship foundation.

I believe strongly that many of you will still be calling one another after you leave NUM whether temporary or permanently.

it's good to blog in a while. to see what has been in your mind for the pass few days or weeks. hmm i would be lying if i said i don't wanan the seven dollar per hour pay, with the bb. but it comes with a great sense of responsibility. it might be too heavy to shoulder, but it's always the learning part to gain.

alright, haven't been updating.
let's talk about today, went sentosa with faggots! we behaved like some monkeys muhahaha, damm fun damm fun! all the crazy stuffs that you can think of happened TODAY! hhahaa, a bunch of monkeys haha, we rolled on the sand like some calendering rollers. we dig sand and bury del, emily and xian like smoe ore diggers lol. damm fun, especially what we have shaped out from using the sand. will upload the pictures soon hee.

new year is gonna be over soon, will upload the new year photos when i'm free. i took some with longlong and minmin. they're my cousins! longlong called me shuai shuai de kelvin kor kor. wakakakakak! damm cute damm cute, i love him. and he is so tall can! i can carry him unlike my naughty girl LOL. evil~ haha

quite broke, cos didn't work much since jan was covered with exams, feb was infested with ang baos and house visitings! haha and gambling hee. overall i think i still win a free trip to visit the doctor. least, my cover is better now. just have to refrain from cold drinks and ah ya all my favourite heaty unhealthy foods i just have to stay away from them:( otherwise i will be coughing like nobody's business hee.

let me share with you something, it's kinda an obstacle faced by my buddy friend, and i wanna share with you all. ok, this friend of mine had a boyfriend who has high ego pride and all, in other words it's like those typical 大男人主义 kinda guy. coming across with obstacles like restricted activities being carried out complying religious believes. ok an advise to all when choosing you spouse-to-be, get someone who likes the way you are right now without any compromisation from either of the party. this will reflect a true natural relationship shared between two, and not mutiple roles being played from one of the party involved. so waste of time, when you realise after so long you can't actually compromise to opposing party's flaws. though it might not be flaws, but time will gradually show the inequality. to justify this, head for your life long partner who love the way you are. the natural self. hmm anyway they will always be obstacle to test the relationship's durablity and felxibility. get thigns done by communicating. couples should love to communicate anything under the sun! in this way, mutual understanding can be acheived. it's so unbearable to see one party don't dare to tell the other about some serious stuffs. it's easy for me to say, but never easy to do. LOL~ anyway, just wan all to fall in love and stay in love! happy post valentine! heee
